Patan Ummar Khan

Forty years of my professional journey in serving the children with Speech and Hearing Disability, I enjoyed many ups and downs, because of my ultimate goal to empower the young children with Hearing Impairment in the country. In this journey, I had an opportunity to serve the Speech and Hearing Disabled Children for 22 years at Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Speech and Hearing Disabled (AYJNISHD), Hyderabad, which is run by Government of India, as a Special Educator supervisor and took VRS on 31st Dec. 2008, to bring the change in the lives of people with disability in the country.

During the year 1984, there was a challenge through on me to trace out a trained special education teachers to teach the Deaf Children in my native place where I wanted to start a Special School for the Deaf with the help of local NGO’s. Since there was no trained teacher available to teach the Deaf, my dreams could not get success. Later on, I decided to go Mumbai to get myself trained by keeping my Chartered Accountancy course aside which was pursuing then, for the sake of a small special school which was initiated in the name of “Helen Keller’s school for the Deaf” at my home town Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh, India. Now, that small school has been grown as a big asylum for more than 1200 Hearing Impaired Students studying every year from pre-school to university level both in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana States of India.

With the belief of “Given an opportunity the Deaf can achieve Higher Education” of mine. I stated a platform by establishing first Degree College for the deaf students in Hyderabad District during the year 2001-2002 and later on at Kadapa District, AP – India in order to provide University Education to the Hearing Handicapped Students. There are about 3200 Hearing Impaired graduated under my leadership from both the Telugu States in India. A small school which was started by me in the year 1985, now it has been grown to one of the Higher level of Institutions (Kinder Garden to Post Graduation) with Research & Rehabilitation Services in the country. All the courses run in this Institution are affiliated to Osmania University and approved by Rehabilitation Council of India, Govt. of India & State Government.

I’m now sixty seven years old and still working with a vision to make this Institution as a deemed to be University in the field of Special Education for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students, ‘Inshallah’ which would be the 1st of its kind in India.
