John Peter Memorial Junior College for the Deaf: A Beacon of Hope and Excellence

The Beginning – 1998

In 1998, a bold and visionary step was taken in Secunderabad, Telangana: the establishment of the first Junior College for the Deaf in the state. Until then, deaf students often faced a ceiling in their educational journey, with very few opportunities to pursue higher secondary education.

This institution was created to break that barrier, ensuring that deaf students could continue their studies beyond school and prepare for university or vocational careers.

The college was not just an academic institution—it was a symbol of inclusion, equality, and empowerment. It gave deaf students the chance to dream bigger, to aspire for professional careers, and to prove that disability is not a limitation when opportunities are provided.

Official Recognition – B.I.E Permission in 2000

Two years after its founding, in 2000, the college received official recognition from the Board of Intermediate Education (B.I.E). This was a landmark achievement, as it validated the institution’s commitment to quality education and gave deaf students access to mainstream academic credentials.

The college offered two streams:

• CEC (Civics, Economics, Commerce)
• MEC (Mathematics, Economics, Commerce)

What made this initiative even more remarkable was the dual medium of instruction: Telugu Medium and English Medium. This flexibility ensured that students from diverse backgrounds could learn in the language they were most comfortable with, while also gaining exposure to English for higher education and global opportunities.

Since its inception, John Peter Memorial Junior College for the Deaf has been a hub of academic excellence. Over the years, more than 3200 deaf students have successfully completed their intermediate education here.

These graduates represent a wide spectrum of success stories:

Special Thanks to the Central Government – DDRS Scheme (2019 onwards)

A turning point in the college’s journey came in 2019, when the Central Government of India extended support through the DDRS Scheme (Deendayal Disabled Rehabilitation Scheme).

Through DDRS:

• The college received financial assistance for infrastructure, teaching aids, and specialized equipment.
• Faculty training programs were enhanced.
• Rehabilitation services such as audiology, speech therapy, and counseling were strengthened.
• Awareness campaigns were conducted to reduce stigma and promote inclusivity in society.

This government support ensured sustainability and growth, allowing the college to continue serving hundreds of students every year.
